I love the book “Golf for Dummies.” Gary McCord is hilarious and brilliant when sharing his tips and secrets about golf. One of the most memorable lines from that book is “Pay me now, or pay me later.” He was describing the importance of golf lessons, especially if you are really struggling with your swing or your game overall.
I think that line in his book could be also applied to golf equipment. I shared last week that I bought a set of Callaway’s at Costco for a good price: Hell, I got 14 clubs for the price of a good set of irons, and you can’t even get a top of the line set irons for what I paid for the Callaway’s at Costco. The problem is I don’t like them. I tried them out on the range twice, and they just don’t feel right to me and I don’t like the look of them. I liked how they looked on the web site and on the box, but not when I actually hit range balls with them.
So I called Golfsmith, because I had a couple of gift cards, I figured I could trade them in, and the sales guy on the phone told me just bring them in. Well, I brought them in and the manager told me that the clubs were not even on the “trade-in-value” list for their store so he couldn’t take them; a waste of a 20 minute drive. NOTE TO GOLFSMITH: BUILD A STORE IN THE LONG BEACH AREA, AND NO, NOT LONG BEACH NEW YORK.
So, I went to a local golf shop, and the guy was interested in making a trade but he couldn’t call the shot because it was the owner’s final say, and of course the owner wasn’t in. The sales guy said that he would be in the next day until 3 p.m. or all day Saturday.
Meanwhile, I haven’t been to the range for 5 days. Long story short, spend the money to buy clubs that fit you. You may pay more but you will save time, aggravation, and doubts that will hurt your game because you don’t have confidence in your clubs. Stay tuned to see if I can reach the owner tomorrow.
